🧪 What to Expect During Assessment Days
🎯 Purpose of This Section
To prepare aspiring pilots for airline and operator assessment days, focusing on psychometric evaluations, simulator checks, and group tasks—ensuring they know what to expect and how to perform with confidence.
🧠 What Are Psychometric Assessments?
Psychometric assessments are standardized tests used to evaluate a candidate’s cognitive ability, behavioral traits, and aptitude for the demands of professional flying. They’re designed to assess:
- Mental agility and problem-solving
- Reaction times and hand-eye coordination
- Multi-tasking and prioritization
- Personality and situational judgment
- Emotional stability and teamwork potential
🧪 Common Types of Psychometric Tests
| Category | Description |
|---|---|
| Numerical Reasoning | Solve math problems under time pressure (e.g. percentages, fuel calculations). |
| Verbal Reasoning | Understand and interpret aviation-related text or briefings. |
| Abstract/Logical Reasoning | Pattern recognition and logic puzzles to assess problem-solving speed. |
| Situational Judgement Tests (SJT) | Choose the most appropriate response in hypothetical cockpit or CRM scenarios. |
| Personality Questionnaires | Assess temperament, team behavior, emotional control, and leadership style. |
| Hand-Eye Coordination Tests | Often include tracking targets, balancing tasks, or simulated flight instruments. |
| Multitasking Exercises | Manage several activities at once, simulating cockpit load (e.g. solving math while tracking instruments). |
📅 Structure of a Typical Assessment Day
Here’s what a pilot candidate might encounter during a selection or assessment day:
- Check-in & Documentation Review
Ensure you have all required documents (CV, license copies, logbook, passport, etc.). - Company Presentation
Often begins with an overview of the airline/operator, its values, and what they look for in candidates. - Online or On-Site Psychometric Tests
May include several hours of computer-based tests, either proctored or taken remotely in advance. - Technical Quiz or Assessment
Some companies include systems, meteorology, ATPL theory questions to test basic knowledge. - Simulator Assessment (if applicable)
Usually performed in pairs with another candidate. Evaluators look for CRM, communication, decision-making, and flying skills under stress—not perfection. - HR and Competency-Based Interview
Often includes STAR questions (covered in Module 5.2), questions about weaknesses, motivation, and experience. - Group Exercises (Airlines only)
Exercises designed to observe how you communicate, collaborate, and lead (or follow) within a team under time pressure.
🧭 General Preparation Tips
✅ Practice in Advance: Use tools like SkyTest®, PilotAptitudeTest™, or online SJT platforms.
✅ Know the Airline’s Culture: Tailor your communication style to match their values.
✅ Rest and Sleep Well: Mental alertness is critical—avoid over-prepping the night before.
✅ Be Yourself in Personality Tests: These are designed to detect faking—answer honestly but professionally.
✅ Stay Calm and Focused: Assessment centers measure how you behave under pressure.
✅ Support Others in Group Tasks: Airlines look for team players, not only leaders.
🎓 Student Exercise (Course Activity)
- Have students complete a timed numerical reasoning test.
- Host a mock group task where students must make a decision under time pressure.
- Ask students to reflect on what traits they demonstrated (leadership, listening, decision-making).
